In June 1998, Kevin Lamont McKinley, founder, president, and CEO of KLM-Mensch Scented Air Filters, LLC, was working as a sales representative for an automotive aftermarket retailer in Tampa, Florida. The first time he saw a cabin air filter, he considered it to be a plain, simple air filter. As he examined it, he wondered, "Wouldn't it be great to have a 'scented' one of these?" He laughed to himself, then stopped, realizing that this was an idea he must pursue. With positive feedback from his parents, friends, and relatives, Kevin committed himself to making the Scented Cabin Air Filter. However, because the cabin air filter was already on the market, he could only devise a device that would have to be embedded in the cabin air filter. To create his concept, Kevin immediately began to sketch components that would make up the Scented Cabin Air Filter. He bought a cabin air filter (one that would fit into a 1998 Buick Regal) and the makings to produce the Fluid Filtration Device. He also experimented with expensive scented lotions and gels used by his girlfriend at the time to build the first model of the Fluid Filtration Device. He later bought a fan and placed the homemade apparatus in the filter. He then tested it by attaching the filter to the fan. The model proved to be a success. Before the air filter began to get congested with lent and pollutants from the air, the scent lasted for more than four months, one month longer than expected, producing a pleasant scent in his room. Kevin then left Tampa, Florida in October of 1998, to pursue patenting his invention in his home state of California, where he is currently working on further researching and developing his products. While working as a temporary administrative assistant for a public transportation company in Oakland, California, Kevin prayed for Jehovah Jireh to assist him in finding an appropriate name for his company. One day, while on the job, he kindly allowed a woman into the building where he worked who needed to refresh herself. She later returned from the restroom and exclaimed, "You are a mensch!" Because he had asked for a name to call his company, The Lord blessed him and it literally came knocking on the door! After years of hard work, Kevin accumulated personal funding for his project so that he could file for a utility patent for the Fluid Filtration Device. His invention, the Fluid Filtration Device is patented (#6,837,444 B1) through the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, D.C. Thus, the start of KLM-Mensch Scented Air Filters, LLC and its premier product: The Snap-It Scented Cabin Air Filter.
